Sacramento Coalition Launches Ranked-Choice Voting Campaign for City Elections

Apr 3, 2026

Better Ballot Sacramento, backed by Cal RCV and FairVote, is campaigning to bring ranked-choice voting to Sacramento’s mayor and city council races, replacing costly primaries with a single, majority-winner election

A new coalition called Better Ballot Sacramento is spearheading an effort to adopt ranked-choice voting (RCV) for city offices such as mayor and city council in the City of Sacramento. Supported by the Sacramento County Democratic Party and the League of Women Voters of Sacramento County, the group is working to place a measure on the November ballot that would allow voters to rank candidates in order of preference instead of choosing just one. Under the proposal, Sacramento would eliminate its primary and top-two runoff system for these local races, consolidating the contest into a single November election where candidates would need to earn a majority through ranked-choice tabulation. Advocates argue this reform would save money by avoiding separate runoffs, ensure winners have broader support, and reduce the risk of razor-thin outcomes. Critics, including some Republicans, express concern that changing the system could further undermine public trust in elections and add confusion for voters.
